SVC is a member of Sweet Adelines International (SAI), an organization of 25,000 women worldwide dedicated to advancing the musical art form of barbershop harmony through education and performances. Each year, SAI’s 600+ choruses compete in their local regions. SVC competes annually against choruses in the Harmony Heartland Region #4, an area that encompasses parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, West Virginia, Tennessee, and Alabama. The chorus first competed in 1988, the year SVC was founded. The chorus was named the Novice Champion and came in sixth place overall. Since that time, the chorus has never placed lower than fifth overall.
In 1999, SAI began dividing the competition by chorus size, with recognition going to small, midsize, and large choruses. While SVC is a large chorus now, we have been the Region 4 AA (midsize) Division Champion eight times in the past (1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009).
In 2001, SAI established the Harmony Classic, an international competition for the five small and mid-sized choruses with the highest scores at their respective regional competitions. Scioto Valley has qualified for the Harmony Classic three times (2001, 2002, and 2005) and was crowned the International AA Champion in 2005! That same year, the chorus was invited to participate in the Buckeye Invitational, a competition of the leading men’s and women’s choruses worldwide. The chorus was named Grand Champion Chorus at that event. In 2009, SVC competed in the Harmony Classic four times, placing first with a record-high score of 1350!
As the 2012 Fourth Place International Chorus Medalists (in Houston, Texas), we competed as a wild card chorus against 32 of the best choruses in the world. As the only rookies in the contest, SVC was proud to be counted among the best of the best for the very first time. To walk away with a fourth-place medal was a dream come true!
Scioto Valley Chorus is proud of our most recent accomplishments – 2022 Champions of Harmony Heartland Region 4 and 2023 International 7th Place Medalist. Other recent awards include Regional Championships in 2020, 2018, 2016, 2014, and 2012, and International Medalists in 2019, 2015, 2013, and 2011.
Competition is not the only mission that Scioto Valley Chorus strives for. SVC is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that is a strong proponent of musical education programs in Ohio and nationally. These programs include but are not limited to, Central Ohio Harmony Camp, Young Women in Harmony, and The Young Singers Foundation, which provides scholarships for vocal music students. Many of our members volunteer yearly at Harmony Camp and give back to our community and our youth. SVC organizes many fundraising events to benefit our chorus through music education and supporting our youth.
Some of the community events we’ve participated in and performed at in the past include the Ohio Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference, National Anthem Singers for The Columbus Clippers, National Anthem Singers for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Women for Economic and Leadership Development, Columbus Arts Festival, Powell Arts Festival, Worthington Holiday Festival, Pataskala Cookie Walk, the Annual SVC Cabaret, holiday shows, teacher’s conferences, and other community and private company events.
